The World is busy

This week’s garden misadventures

It may be time to give up on the cucumbers. My current theory is I have a pollination problem. The yellow flowers come out to play all day. They’re cheerful, and vibrant, and if I were a bee I imagine I’d want to pollinate the heck out of them. The flowers all successfully produce cucumbers. The cucumbers grow to about an inch and hang out for a day or two. I watch them during this window, my hopes swelling…and then nope, they die.

I planted some wildflower seeds in big pots nearby hoping a batch of wildflowers would encourage interest from my buzzy friends, who by the way are plentiful in my back yard. They zip too close to my hair and face all afternoon long. I watered the seeds faithfully for two weeks and two finally sprouted, only to crumple back into the soil during a 100 degree heatwave. Which is pretty much what happened to my strawberry plant last year too. This morning I sprinkled more seeds on top of the planters. We’ll see if anything blooms, but in any case it’s too late for the cucumbers I think.

In non-cucumber news, Fat Gus has been enjoying the bird seed I put out, so that’s a win…for him. Not so much for any of the birds I was hoping to attract. Well delight in this, Fat Gus: I just found an Instagram account about charcuterie boards for birds. You better bet I’m going to give that a try.
